Hoenig and I went from Portland to the top of Mt. Shasta and back again in less than 24 hours. Zack drove up from the Bay Area and met us at the trailhead.

11/21Japan: Hiroshima
This city certainly needs no introduction. What may surprise you is Hiroshima's recovery into a delightful port city. We spent two days here, including a half-day trip to the island of Miyajima (rated as one of the three most beautiful spots in Japan).
11/20Japan: Nara
Nara (a popular day trip from Kyoto) is packed with parks and temples, and has tame deer that eat out of your hand and have unfettered access to all parts of the city.
11/17Japan: Kyoto
The former capital of Japan, Kyoto was spared from bombing during World War II and thus is a treasure trove of Japanese history and culture. Aimee and I spent three days here.
11/16Japan: Takayama
Takayama is a small Japanese town located about 2 hours by slow train from Nagoya. Because of its remoteness and the high cost of travel in Japan, not many gaijin make it out this way - many people seemed surprised to see Westerners here.
11/15Japan: Hakone
Renowned for great views of Mt. Fuji and sulphurous hot springs, Hakone is a small mountain city located about 60km from Tokyo. Aimee and I spent two days here.
